We recently uploaded the latest version of our rug designing program from Nepal, which makes it much easier to create custom sized rugs.

The artwork above illustrates how great Rabat Plain and Star Tile look in custom sizes. The complexity of the design determines how long it takes to resize the rugs. Some designs are quicker to resize than others, some can take a week or more of solid design work to complete.

The only restriction with custom rugs is the maximum size that can be woven from our mill in Nepal, 735cm x 1100cm for rectangular rugs and 735cm diametre for circular rugs.

When given the chance to design a wide width (300cm from selvedge to selvedge) burnout for Meridian’s Folk Revival collection, I immediately thought of creating a border design. The fabric being wide width meant the border could continuously run along the bottom of the window with no seams. Further investigation into border designs revealed that sampling unfortunately created loads of wastage. I didn’t want to just give up on the idea, so I went back to the drawing board and designed a vine that could grow up the border from selvedge to selvedge. This new design meant no wastage when sampling and no repeat within the design, so it took weeks to create the entire 300cm. The result is a unique and decorative burnout sheer, well worth all the hard work!

INK EXPERIMENTS!!

Ngahuia and I while looking for inspiration for our latest collection came across lots of amazing ink patterns in our latest View textile magazine, so we tried some of our own.

This is a shot of Ngahuia's wet paper towel that she had squeezed ink into while it was folded.

This is what it ended up looking like once unfolded, we found all the colours once they had dried became a lot less intense so we were fortunate to take the photos while they were still wet.

This is a group photo of some of our favourite ink experiments, what we really loved about this process wasn't only the instant repeat that would evolve once unfolded but the anticipation of wondering what it would look like once unfolded.

WALL FLOWERS

Lily

This design was the very first starting point of Petit Trianon, I started of using water lilies as the main motif for I knew that they were a real delicacy in the 1700s, but after getting together with the team we decided to change the flower motif based on that it wasn't sitting well enough with our other designs, making Lily our first Wall Flower!!

Tiger Rose

Tiger Rose is one of many trials for a design that is still in the making, I have simplified it a lot since this stage, I find with my designs when ever in doubt simplify them, similar to Coco Chanel's theory about always take two items of jewelry off when you think you are finished getting ready to go out.

Beads
This design was designed for a delicate beaded quality, unfortunetly we could't find a quality suitable for this design that was for interior use making it another wall flower.

Fleur

Fleur was another design for the Dauphine collection, we even had it woven a few times trying to get it right, in the end the actual fabric ended up too expensive for such a little design so we decided to let it go.

CRADLE TO CRADLE

Our latest outdoor collection, Australian Botanicals Outdoor, is certified Cradle-to-Cradle™. Read on to find out what that actually means...


Australian Botanicals Outdoor’s yarn is MBDC Cradle-to-Cradle™ silver certified, which means the materials can be perpetually circulated in closed loops. Made from post industrial waste and produced using environmental friendly manufacturing processes the yarns use a by-product from the petroleum refining process, reducing the use of virgin material.

The yarn production begins with the reclamation of material that would otherwise be incinerated, eliminating further contamination of the environment. This yarn requires substantially less energy to
manufacture and uses only a small amount of water during the process. Most importantly, it produces no harmful industrial waste.


After its long and useful life Australian Botanicals Outdoor fabrics can be sent back to the yarn manufacturer and inserted into a recycle stream. Both yarn and fabric can be safely and easily converted into inert resin pellets that are used in a myriad of products and industries, offsetting the need for the use of virgin plastic pellets.

I am obsessed with drawing birds at the moment, in saying that I find them a real challenge! This lamp shade took me a month to complete, painting straight on to fabric is a real challenge in its self, the fabric bleeds and absorbs all the paint leaving watermarks. Once I had painted a few coats it made it a lot easier to create more detail. Now this lamp is in my living room and I look upon it with an eye of love and painful memories.

The talented bespoke designer Tamara Maynes is no stranger to the Mokum design studio. We love Tamara’s work and have commissioned her to create loads of props for our events, displays and photoshoots.

State of Design

If you're lucky enough to be in Melbourne this month be sure to check out the events surrounding the State of Design Festival. The festival is an initiative of the Victorian State Government, and will host over 100 interactive events, exhibitions, workshops and talks from 15 – 25 July!
